Cisco AnyConnect is an application that the University makes available to students, faculty, and staff for free which may be used to establish a VPN connection with the University from off campus. For most applications, such as Labview and software that requires a Remote Desktop Connection, like STATA, you should set the VPN application up so that all traffic is going over the VPN connection. For the UIUC campus you should set tunneling to ALL instead of Split. For the UIUC campus this can be set in the login screen.

If you have a guest account, Technology Services recommends VPN, Virtual Private Networking (VPN) for Mobile for on-campus use.
Two things to note about the UIUC VPN: It can run in two different ways/modes/profiles: Split Tunnel and Tunnel All. Split tunnel only sends traffic to the university through the VPN, all other traffic uses your normal internet connection. Tunnel all sends all traffic from your machine to the univeristy first, and then out to the internet. B) VPN (Virtual Private Network) Installing a VPN client will allow you to securely connect to databases from any off-campus location by routing your activity through the campus network. Once connected, this will let you operate in the same way you would if you were on campus.
